EXCELSIOR YANGON

Rating: Deluxe

Originally the head quarters of the Steel Brothers Company, the Yangon Excelsior is a themed heritage property with generous sprinkles of contemporary flair; think a combination of the Strand Hotel Yangon, Hotel G Yangon and COMO Metropolitan Bangkok. Being only a short walk from Sule Pagoda and Mahabandula Park, the location is extremely central making it an ideal option for downtown exploration and dining out. With 74 rooms and suites, it’s a fairly sizeable property, but one that feels a lot smaller than it is thanks to excellent ergonomics, clever design, lots of personalisation and wonderfully attentive service.

There are six room types; Superior, Superior Executive, Deluxe, Deluxe Executive, Junior Suite and “The Loft”. As their names suggest, the Superior Executive and Deluxe Executive have access to the fourth floor executive lounge. Superior rooms are furnished with double beds only; for twin beds it will be necessary to upgrade to Deluxe. Those celebrating a special occasion should consider staying in the Junior Suite or “The Loft”, which is the most spacious option at 65m2 in size. Superior rooms start at 30 to 35m2, with the Deluxe starting at 37 to 45m2. Connecting rooms are available on request.

One thing we particularly like about the Yangon Excelsior is that they’re aiming to be plastic free (as much as they can in Yangon). This is a great initiative, which we hope more hotels in Myanmar will start to sign up to. It’s also a great example of what can be done to revitalise Yangon’s fading colonial heritage.

Facilities:

  • Two restaurants (The Newsroom and Steel Brothers Wine & Grill)
  • Spa
