The Golden Rock balancing precariously on the edge of a cliff face

The iconic Golden Rock looks out over its vast natural surroundings

160km northeast of Yangon you will find one of the holiest pilgrimage sites in the country, the Golden Rock. The stupa, believed to enshrine a single strand of the Buddha’s hair, is positioned on top of a gold covered boulder, which in turn is balanced precariously on the edge of a cliff face. Whilst a glimpse of the iconic rock is what most people come to see, it is usually the journey up there that most people will come home talking about. In order to reach the summit, visitors are required to drive up 11km of windy mountain road in the back of a pick-up truck, followed by a short climb on foot. The view from the top is simply breath taking.
